2、ryThepolypeptidecompositionsoftwocoronaviruses,humancoronavirusstrain229E(HCV229E)andmousehepatitisvirusstrain3(5/[HV3),werecharacterisedonpolyacrylamidegels.Similarpolypeptidepatternswereobservedforbothvirusesconsistingoflargesurfaceprojectionglycopolypeptidesof

3、tool.wt.160,000and105,000forHCV229E,and170,000and90,000forMHV3,twosmallpoly-peptidesofmol.wt.varyingfrom24,000to20,000,andapolypeptideofmol.wt.50,000.Theresultsarediscussedwithrespecttopreviousreportsofthepoly-peptidesoftheseandothercoronaviruses.Coronavii~sescom

4、prisearecentlydescribedgroupofvirusesthathavebeencharaeterisedmainlyontheirsimilaruniquemorphology(2,15).TheyarealllargesinglestrandedRNAviruseswithlipid-containingenvelopesrangingindiameterfrom80to.200nmandpossesswidely-spacedclub-shapedsurfaceprojectionsupto20n

5、minlength(11).Thepolypeptidecompositionoffivecoronaviruseshavebeendescribed,nam-ely:humancoronavirus(HCV)strains229E(6)andOC43(7);mousehepatitisvirus(MHV)strainsA59(3,13)andJHM(3,16);avianinfectiousbronchitisvirus(IBV)(1,8,10);transmissiblegastroenteritisvirus(TG

6、EV)(4,5)andhaemagglutinatingencephalomyelitisvirus(HEV)(12).MarkedsimilaritieswereobservedinthepolypeptidesofthettCVstrains0C43(7)and229E(6),whentheywerepurifiedandanalysedbythesametechniquesinthesamelaboratory.Similarly,thepolypeptidesoftheMHVstrainsJttMVandA59V

7、(3),onlydif-feredslightlyinmol.wt.whenanalysedunderidenticalconditions.However,noclosesimilaritieshavebeenobservedpreviouslybetweenhumanandmousecorona-viruses,orbetweenthepolypeptidesofanyothercoronaviruses.Thismaybedueinparttothevariousreel;hodsusedforvirusgrowt
