3、esspeakthesamelanguage,buttheircommunicationmaybreakdownduetopragmaticdifferencesinwaysofthink－ing,rulesofspeaking,socialvalues,lexicalconnotationsandotherfactors.Pragmaticfailures,whicharisewhenspeakerscan’pro－tduceappropriateutterancesorcan’reachproperlytoanut－tteranceorcontext,arequitecommonamon

4、gEnglishlearnersinChina.Pragmaticfailureisnotcausedbytheaspectofwronggrammar,orinappropriatesyntax,butmainlyduetotheunsuitablespeakingmanner,orspeakingatunsuitabletimeorfailuretokeepupwiththenativespeaker’expressivehabitsorneglectingtheculturalbackgroundsofthecounterparts,etc.Suchfailuresbringabout

5、greatdifficultyforcross-culturalcommunicationandhavebecomethemaincausesofcommuni－cationfailures.Althoughbothgrammaticalandpragmaticfail－urescanledtocommunicativefailures,nativespeakersareusuallytolerantoftheformerandattributeittospeakers’in－abilitytospeakEnglishwellsinceitcanbefoundfromthesurfacest

6、ructure.However,ifamanwithfluentspokenEng－lishmakesapragmaticmistake,thehearerswillnotattributeittohislackoflinguisticcompetence,instead,theymostlyat－tributeittohisrudenessorillwill.Therefore,pragmaticfail－uresinevitablyleadtofailuresinorevenbreakdownofcom－munication.Howtoeliminateorreducepragmatic
