2、irus-likeparticlesweredetectedbyelectronmicroscopyintheintestinalcontentsofpigsduringadiarrhealoutbreakon4swinebreedingfarms.Diarrheawasreproducedinexperimentalpigswithoneoftheisolates,designatedCV777,whichwasfoundtobedistinctfromthe2knownporcinecoronaviruses,trans-missiblegastroenteritisvir
3、usandhemagglutinatingencephalomyelitisvirus.In1946,DoYr.EandHUTC~I~GS(2)describedaviraldiarrhea,inswineandcalledittransmissiblegastroenteritis.Untilrecently,transmissiblegastroenteritisviruswastheonlyvirusknowntobespecificallyassociatedwithdiarrheainswineofallages.In1976,followingthediscover
4、yofrotavirusesindifferent,animalspecies,aporcinerotaviruswasdetectedinthefecesofpigswithdiarrhea(14).Diarrheacouldbereproducedexperimentallyinpigletswiththisvirus.InasearchforrotavirusesonBelgianswinebreedingfarmswithdiarrhealproblems,anewcoronavirus-likeparticlewasdetectedbyelectronmicrosco
5、picexaminationofintestinalorfecalsamplesfromsickpigs.Thepresentreportdescribesthemorphologyofthiscoronavirus-likeparticle,andshowsthatitisdistinctfromtheknownporcinecoronavirusesandcausesdiarrhea.Uptonow,theonlycoronavirusesisolatedfromswinehavebeentransmissiblegastroenteritisvirus{TGEV)andh
6、emagglutinatingencephalomyelitisvirus(HEV).TGEVhasbeendescribedasacauseofdiarrheainswineincountriesallovertheworld(13).Numerousstudieshavebeenperformedonthevirus--animalinteractionsofTGEV,whichisusuallydetectedeitherbyitsisolationfromfecalThesestudiesweresupportedbytheInstitutefortheEncourag
