3、rporatehabitatstructureorallownaturalcommunitydynamicstodevelop.Here,weusearangeofhabitatcon?gurationsinamodelmarinebenthicsystemtoinvestigatetheeffectsofspeciescomposition,resourceheterogeneityandpatchconnectivityonecosystempropertiesatboththepatch(bioturbat
4、ionintensity)andmulti-patch(nutrientconcentration)scale.Weshowthatallowingfaunatomoveandpreferentiallyselectpatchesalterslocalspeciescompositionanddensitydistributions,whichhasnegativeeffectsonecosystemprocesses(bioturbationintensity)atthepatchscale,butoveral
5、lpositiveeffectsonecosystemfunctioning(nutrientconcentration)atthemulti-patchscale.Our?ndingsprovideimportantevidencethatcommunitydynamicsalterinresponsetolocalizedresourceheterogen-eityandthatthesesmall-scalevariationsinhabitatstructurein?uencespeciescontrib
